20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA and COMPULSION

    G     Approved     5h13m

Richard Fleischer was a versatile American film director known for helming nearly 50 films across many genres, including the sci-fi classics, the film noir and epics. The son of animation pioneer Max Fleischer, he began his career at RKO in the 1940s, and his work spanned from low-budget thrillers to big-budget spectacles, making him a popular and prolific director throughout Hollywood's Golden Age and the New Wave era.

    Today’s event will be:

20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA and COMPULSION.

In person is Richard’s granddaughter Claire

with a Q&A moderated by Tim Williams of TV Guide.

20,000 LEAGUES UNDER HE SEA, The oceans during the late 1800s are no longer safe; many ships have been lost. Sailors have returned to port with stories of a vicious narwhal (a giant whale with a long horn) which sinks their ships. A naturalist, Professor (Pierre) Aronnax, his assistant, Conseil, and a professional whaler, Ned Land, join a US expedition which attempts to unravel the mystery.

COMPULSION, In 1924 Chicago, Artie Strauss and Judd Steiner are friends and fellow law students who both come from wealthy backgrounds. They have few true friends as they believe all their contemporaries are intellectually inferior. Within their relationship, Artie is the dominant and Judd the submissive who says he will do whatever Artie tells him. Although Judd acts intellectually arrogant to others, he also shows signs of weakness and reticence most evident to Artie. Part of their goal in life is to experience how it feels to do everything. As such, they plot to commit what they consider the perfect crime - a kidnapping and murder - not only so that they can experience the sense of killing for killing's sake, but also taunt the law with the knowledge of it and their superiority after the fact. They believe their crime is above the law. Their murder of young Paulie Kessler is not so perfect, with evidence at the scene uncovered by one of their law school colleagues, Sid Brooks, who also works for the Globe newspaper. As Artie and Judd try to manipulate their way out of how the evidence may implicate them, their manipulation ultimately backfires and they are charged with the murder. The most famed trial lawyer in town, Jonathan Wilk, is hired to defend the pair despite his atheism being against the families' sensibilities. Jonathan, renowned for his ability to manipulate juries, has to decide how best to defend his clients in the overwhelming face of evidence against them. The testimony of Ruth Evans, Sid's girlfriend, may have some impact on the trial's outcome.

Michael, Vito's youngest son and a decorated WW II Marine is also present at the wedding. Michael seems to be uninterested in being a part of the family business. Vito is a powerful man, and is kind to all those who give him respect but is ruthless against those who do not. But when a powerful and treacherous rival wants to sell drugs and needs the Don's influence for the same, Vito refuses to do it. What follows is a clash between Vito's fading old values and the new ways which may cause Michael to do the thing he was most reluctant in doing and wage a mob war against all the other mafia families which could tear the Corleone family apart.

    THE PRINCESS BRIDE

    1987    PG    1h50m

Reviewers say 'The Princess Bride' is acclaimed for its romance, adventure, and comedy, featuring memorable characters and quotable lines. The film's humor, dialogue, and story are often praised, along with standout performances by Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, and Andre the Giant. The grandfather-grandson framing device adds nostalgia. Some critique special effects and pacing, but the film is widely regarded as a timeless classic.

    Rock Is Dead

       34min

In the suburban sprawl of the San Fernando Valley, four reject bandmates - Ezra,

Truman, Paul, and Fats - are trying to do the impossible: start a rock band in a

world that has left rock music to die.

The boys chase old highs of the music they love, wishing to be the pinnacle of

their own generation, except there’s one problem: they’re terrible. Their songs fall

apart, their timing is messy, and most rehearsals end in bruised egos. Ezra, the

drummer, is determined to resurrect the genre and build a band so undeniably

killer that the world has no choice but to look. As the group struggles to stay

together, Ezra spirals trying to force greatness out of a dying dream. Truman

suggests recruiting a new band member, setting the band on a collision course

    between reinvention and total collapse
